'Cozy' games have a sense of security about them. Basic needs such as food and shelter are fulfilled meaning the player only has to worry about forming relationships and developing their character. There is no set challenge or constant adrenaline rush. Cozy games focus on higher order needs such as self reflection rather than scavenging for food.
There is no race in 'Cozy' games. Everything is done at the player's pace. There are no time constraints.
'Cozy' games don't come about solely by the game dynamics. Aesthetics play a major role in creating this 'Cozy' atmosphere within gameplay. Providing evidence of an abundance of food or flowers create a sense of security. Clear signals of calmness and support such as a sleeping dog help to provoke a feeling of comfort. Keeping the game design 'close to home' keeps a sense of familiarity within the game leading to a sense of comfort and warmth within the game.
Allowing characters to develop relationships with the player create a sense of trust which reminds the player of the real world, by doing this, the player feels a sense of coziness and warmth. Players feel as though they fit in and are welcome if characters are nice to them within the game, furthermore evoking that cozy and comfortable feeling inside the player when they play the game.
