Prototyping:

"Build it as fast as possible. Cut corners. Make it as ugly and cheap as you can get away with."~ Learn Canvas

Prototyping is important because it shows the designer where the game design is headed. Prototyping is a very rough example of what the designer plans the game to look like, it is all about getting the main idea of the game across.

"Make your prototype easy to change. You will find problems in playtesting, so make it easy to adjust on the fly." ~ Learn Canvas.

The prototyping part of a project can be used to test gameplay. By testing game play within a prototype the designer learns what needs to be added or taken away from the game.

Board Games

"It's not my intention to make a definitive set of "rules" for good design." - Greg Aleknevicus

The main "Rules" to creating good game design are:

Cards- Index cards on all four corners, Use large indices, Use a white border and Include extra cards as replacements.

The Box- List the name of the game on the side of the box, Make sure any "back of the box" photo shows a legal game position and Print opposite sides of the box horizontally and vertically.

Theme- Have the theme work with the rules rather than against them.

Rules- Blind test the rules, Do not write intentionally vague rules and include a detailed list of components and include many examples.
